Why I Write – ( my first blog hop)

Hi there, a few weeks ago, I got tagged by the fabulous Lisa, at Cut My Milk, to join in a blog-hop and write a post about my writing process.

My response was “hell yes!” Quickly followed by “what writing process?

I got started and then life happened, and now it’s been lurking, unfinished, on my to-do list for a couple of weeks. I don’t know why I’ve been putting it off but the Squishy is asleep and Princess is doing something that involves barbie dolls, sticky tape and the cat – yeah I’m kinda scared to go look. Anyway, that means I should have at least half and hour to sit down and finish writing this thing, so here goes.

What am I working on?

Trying not to lose the children under the mountain of (clean) washing that threatens to overtake most of our living area.

Trying to build a house. (well, actually feeding, picking up after and trying to help Husband so he can build a house)

Trying to remember where I left my sanity (it’s probably under that pile of washing too)

Oh, you meant what am I working on writing? Yeah, um, not much.

How does my writing differ from others in my genre?

I’m not entirely sure what genre my blog fits into.

This Is Beck is 2 parts Mummy Blog, 3 parts Personal Diary mixed a cup of with craft and cooking, a dollop of house building D.I.Y. Stir well and throw in a handful of assorted animals and family members for extra crunch. Cook over a high heat with plenty of wine. Season well with anxiety and PND and serve with a side of humour and honesty.

Why do I write what I do?

Because I can’t not write. It’s just that now I let everyone see it.

Ever since I first learnt to hold a pen, I have filled countless notebooks and journals with all sorts of random thoughts. It seems to be the way my brain works best, I can think clearer when I let the words out onto paper, things seem to make more sense that way. My blog is just an extension of the diaries I have always kept. I love that people actually read what I write, but I would still be writing this, even if nobody ever read it. I write the way I talk, honestly, straight from the heart and with plenty of emotion.

How does your writing process work?

Haha! That’s a good one, makes it sound like I’m a real writer or something.

Short answer? It doesn’t.

Usually I get an idea for a post I want to write. I go looking for something to write it down on, find that my notebook isn’t where I left it, go looking for it, find it hiding somewhere amongst all the toys (only after I’ve had to put them all away) Grab a cup of tea, sit down to write a post, one of the kids will inevitably poop, I’ll deal with that, reheat my tea, sit down again and have no idea  what I was going to write about. So, umm, what were we talking about?

It’s one of my goals for this year to try to get some kind of schedule happening and at least get something up on the blog semi-regularly. I’ll keep working toward that, but hey, we’re only 8 months into the year…I wouldn’t want to rush it 😉

Ok, so the next part of this blog hop thingie is to tag a few of my favourite bloggers to join in too. Although, since this thing has been up and running for a while, most of my faves have already done it so I’m only going to chose one, the gorgeous Vicki from Knocked Up and Abroad.

And I’ll link back to a few of my favourite posts from earlier in the hop. M’kay?

Vicki and one of the little Vicklets

Knocked Up and Abroad was conceived when Vicki backpacked around Europe where she visited 7 countries, over 7 weeks, whilst 7 months pregnant. Now she tackles a more suburban existence muddling through motherhood but still seeking out adventure with 2 Vicklets in tow.

This hop thing started over at Always Josefa, so stop by there to check out the other posts, and here are links to a couple of my faves Cooker and a Looker, Home Life SimplifiedThe Mother load.

As always, thanks so much for stopping by, feel free to let me know any of your fave blogs in the comments section.

Big Hugs

Why I Still Love Social Media.

Hi there, thanks for stopping by.

There’s been a lot of talk recently about the “evils of social media” and the tragic death this week of Charlotte Dawson just seems to highlight that fact. There’s certainly no arguing that a lot of sad, little people take to twitter and FB and attack others as a way of feeling better about their own pathetic lives.

But I don’t want the trolls to ruin what can be a really wonderful thing.

When I started this blog it was as a way of documenting this crazy adventure we’d started on; and also because living in a shed, up a mountain, with a baby was incredibly isolating and I needed to feel connected to the rest of the world.

So “Mama Up The Mountain” was born and eventually evolved into “This Is Beck”.

Over the last year and a half I have shared everything with you, the birth of my gorgeous Squishy, my (ongoing) struggles with PND and anxiety, everyday dramas associated with living up the mountain. The highest of highs and the lowest of lows.

And you know what?

The response I get from you guys always astounds me.

Every. Single. Time.

Somehow I still am blown away that people actually read what I write.

And this has turned into such a gorgeous little community, there are some lovely ladies who I have gotten to know through this, some are other bloggers, other are regular commenters and I wouldn’t hesitate to call you guys my friends, even though we’ve never actually met. You guys help me every day, whether you realise it or not.

Other bloggers who opened up about their own experiences with depression that made me feel I wasn’t alone and inspired me to share my own story. Commenters who told me that they had been through similar things and gave me hope that I could get through it too.

There is a really lovely side to the internet that doesn’t get as much news time as the trolls, there are amazing people who really want to help and inspire others, there are some great resources out there like #pndchat on twitter and The Anxiety Disorders Association of Victoria (adavic) Facebook page as well as some wonderful pages and groups that give people a place to connect and chat.

So, I just wanna say thank-you guys and girls, you make my little corner of the internet a much brighter place; and if I could ask you to do just one thing for me, when you’re scrolling through your newsfeeds, (or twitter feeds) take a second to stop and comment or like things from the pages and people you really like, because that interaction from you is the reason we do what we do.

Till next time,

This Is Beck xoxo

A Year Of Change

Hi there peeps, welcome to the new year.

Last year was a year of self discovery for me; learning about myself, making some connections, finally (starting to) understand a few things that have never quite made sense to me, a few ‘lightbulb’ moments.

This is going to be a year for change.

I know I need to make some changes.

There are too many things that are just not working.

Personally, I need to learn to prioritize, not everything needs to get done right away. I tend to take on too much and then get overwhelmed and end up not getting anything done. I need to start giving myself some real “me-time”, to start re-charging batteries that have been running on empty for way too long.  I need to start facing some of my fears and take back control of my life.

I have learned that mess and chaos = stress and anxiety for me. I’ve alway embraced “spur-of-the-moment” and freedom from schedules and routines but that is exactly what I’m going to need to learn to do. Implement (and stick to!) some new routines around meal times, bed times, house work etc.

So, there’s no “New Year’s resolutions” for me, just a direction of where I want to start heading this year.

Where are you heading this year?

{as always, I love to hear from you guys. Please feel free to leave a comment if you’d like to 😉 }

Road Trip

* Finally got around to finishing off the blog post I wrote 3 weeks ago, lets just blame it on Christmas, or the kids, or whatever else you wanna think up…*

Hubby and I decided to treat ourselves to a little pre-Christmas treat last weekend.

We had to make the road trip down to Warnambool to pick up our pup so I jumped online and booked us a night away.

Saturday, we left the kiddies and headed off down the great ocean road. I haven’t been down there for at least 15 yrs and had forgotten what a gorgeous drive it is.

We stopped at Anglesea for breakfast at the General Store, Kane had the biggest home-made sausage roll I have ever seen (and yummy too) and a decadent gooey chocolate brownie and a caffeine top-up for me.
Back on the road, sun shining, music blaring. The perfect day for a road trip, the only thing that could have made it better would have been to be driving it in a convertible.
Next stop was a pretty stretch of beach just out of Apollo Bay, where we went for a little walk, checking out rock pools.

We couldn’t drive past the 12 Apostles without stopping to take a peek. Absolutely stunning.

(Stay tuned for part 2 in a day or two  whenever I remember to do it!)

Till then, hope everyone had a great Christmas, I am still completely stuffed from non-stop eating and drinking the last few days (and loving it!)

Welcome (back) to my (new) blog :)

Hi there,

I’m Beck.

This is my blog.

Soooo…come here often? Nope, that’s ok, me neither.

Ok, a little bit about me…

I’m 31 years old, I  have a husband who is totally into d.i.y-ing the shit out of everything, (seriously, he’s building our whole house!) 2 gorgeous kidlets who drive me batshit crazy, but also make me laugh everyday and I love them to bits.

This little bundle of cuteness is 9 month old Carter, also known as Squishy-baby

I went and fell in love with a country boy and packed up my whole life and moved up the bush to be with him. Throw in assorted family dramas, a few crazy animals, building our own house, a couple of babies, living in the shed while we build our house, a few personal issues…and hey presto, here we are.

This is my gorgeous Scout, also known as Snugglebug, with my hubby, Kane

I’m craft-mad and a bit of a hoarder, I love food, wine, music, books and animals. (I have a bit of a habit of bringing home rescuing stray creatures) I love op-shopping for bargain vintage finds, I love bold colours and bling and gorgeous shoes. I have battled too many things in my life, from anxiety and depression to crazy family members, I refuse to let those things rule my life anymore. Sometimes I swear too much, sometimes I drink too much, but I am finally at a place in my life where I am happy just being Me.

So, welcome to the crazy, I hope you’ll stick around for a while

(I love to hear from you guys too, so feel free to leave a comment or drop me a message anytime xoxo)

I’m Back Baby, I’m Back

“Honey I’m home!”

I’m so glad I took this little break from the blog, it helped me realise how much I really enjoy writing and I’m so glad to be back. I’ve spent the last couple of months with so many blog posts rattling around in my head, just desperate to jump out.

But it has changed my perspective on things and on the direction I want my blog (and my life) to head.

I’m thinking about a bit of a “re-branding”.  I haven’t decided yet if I’ll change the name of the blog yet, but I’m making a lot of changes in my life and I feel like  I need to make a bit of a change here to reflect that.

When I started this blog it was mostly to document my journey through moving to the bush and building our own house. It’s still  about that, but I also want to go a bit deeper. I feel like I’ve been “editing” my posts to make them more “user-friendly” and being really careful not to offend anyone, and in doing that I’ve lost my voice and what I want to say.

If I’m going to write, I need to do it honestly and stay true to myself, or not do it at all.

I’m doing a lot of reading and trying to work out the direction I want to be heading in, the counselling I’ve had for the PND has been great in helping me to see areas of my life that need a bit of work and I’ve started reading the simplify your life ebook from HLS and I’m really loving it. It’s been fantastic for helping me “audit” my life and really look at what’s working and what’s not.

So, stay tuned as I do a bit of “tweaking ” around the blog and FB page and thanks for sticking with me this far.

Till next time,

Beck xoxo

*this post is in no way sponsored by HLS, I paid for my ebook just like everybody else, I’m just talking about it because I genuinely think it’s awesome and I’m really enjoying reading it*
